Dr. Stanley M. Lo is a teaching professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, co-director of the Joint Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Science Education, and affiliate faculty in the Research Ethics Program at the University of California San Diego. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University and his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His current interest in education research developed through his work as a senior research associate at the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching at Northwestern University. His scholarship examines how faculty conceptions of diversity inform instructional and mentoring practices, how student identities intersect with experiences and learning, and how innovative programs can support transfer student success. He was a National Academies Education Fellow and Mentor in Life Sciences and later served on the steering committee of the National Institute on Scientific Teaching, as president of the Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research, and recently as chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Undergraduate Biology Education Research. Dr. Lo has mentored over 50 undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in research, who have worked together with the goal of advancing inclusive excellence in STEM higher education. Dr. Lo has served as an editor with CBE-Life Sciences Education and CourseSource, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching.
