The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Stanley M. Lo of the University of California San Diego as the next Editor-in-Chief of Scholarship and Practice of Undergraduate Research (SPUR), effective June 1, 2026. SPUR is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing evidence-based practices, research, and innovation in undergraduate research published by CUR.
Dr. Lo brings an extensive background in undergraduate education, inclusive excellence, mentorship, and scholarly publishing to the role. He currently serves as Teaching Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology and Co-Director of the Joint Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Science Education at the University of California San Diego.
Lo expresses, “I am deeply honored to serve as the next Editor-in-Chief of SPUR. Early in my career, CUR Quarterly, the precursor to SPUR, shaped much of my professional thinking about mentoring, teaching, and course-based undergraduate research, so this role feels especially meaningful as an opportunity to give back. I hope to work with various CUR communities to broaden participation across disciplines and institution types represented in SPUR and to support authors, reviewers, and editors through transparent and developmental editorial processes.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Lo has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing undergraduate research and evidence-based teaching practices. He has mentored more than 50 undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars, and has served in numerous national leadership roles, including as a National Academies Education Fellow and Mentor in Life Sciences, President of the Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research, and Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Undergraduate Biology Education Research. He also brings significant editorial experience, having served as an Editor for CBE—Life Sciences Education and CourseSource and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching.

CUR also extends its sincere gratitude to outgoing Editor-in-Chief Dr. Pam Mabrouk for her dedicated service to SPUR. Her stewardship helped strengthen the journal’s impact and visibility across the undergraduate research community.
