AAPT’s Cunningham Selected as 2026-2027 Council on Undergraduate Research Treasurer, Line to Presidency

Beth A. Cunningham, Chief Executive Officer of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), has been selected to serve on the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) Board of Directors as an officer in the presidential line. Cunningham will serve a four-year term with a stepped rotation of: Treasurer (2026-2027), President-Elect (2027-2028), President (2028-2029), and Immediate Past President (2029-2030). Cunningham steps into the role of Treasurer as of June 2026.

“Undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry are the cornerstones of academic excellence, and CUR has consistently led the charge in making those opportunities possible,” explains Cunningham. “It is a privilege to enter the presidential line, drawing on my deep roots within this community to empower faculty mentors, secure vital resources, and broaden the horizons of what our students can achieve.”

Cunningham brings a distinguished record of leadership, innovation, and advocacy in science education and undergraduate research to her new role with CUR. As CEO at AAPT, Cunningham has dedicated her career to advancing excellence in STEM education, supporting faculty development, and expanding opportunities for student engagement in research and discovery. A nationally recognized leader in physics education, she has championed evidence-based teaching practices, student success initiatives, and collaborative partnerships that strengthen the educational pipeline from undergraduate study through professional careers. Her extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, strategic planning, financial stewardship, and community building makes her exceptionally well-positioned to help guide CUR’s future and further its mission of advancing undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry across all disciplines.

Founded in 1978, the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) focuses on providing high-quality and collaborative undergraduate research, scholarly, and creative activity. Among the many activities and networking opportunities that CUR provides, the organization also offers support for the professional growth of faculty and administrators through expert-designed institutes, conferences, and a wide-range of volunteer positions. The CUR community, made up of nearly 700 institutions and 13,000 individuals, continues to provide a platform for discussion and other resources related to mentoring, connecting, and creating relationships centered around undergraduate research. CUR’s advocacy efforts are also a large portion of its work as they strive to strengthen support for undergraduate research. Its continued growth in connections with representatives, private foundations, government agencies, and campuses world-wide provides value to its members and gives voice to undergraduate research.
